When I first started out as a doula, every single doula I met was in solo practice, running their own business. A few had informal backup arrangements, but no one worked in a group or partnership. I’ve noticed a big shift, and now there are doulas working alone, doulas working in partnerships, doula groups, even doula agencies. I’ve seen changes in how people practice, and a shift towards more formally organized doula businesses as well. But I couldn’t begin to tell you when or how those shifts happened. I decided I wanted to be able to better know how the doula field has been changing, and so I started the Doula Survey in 2020. It’s not something I profit from (in fact, I fund it out of my own pocket) it’s just something I enjoy doing and sharing so that those just starting out can get a taste of how others run their businesses.
